How to Change Your Name After Your Wedding

Congratulations on your wedding! If you’re considering changing your name, it’s important to know that it’s entirely up to you. There’s no rule that says you have to change it right away—or at all. But if you’re ready, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process in New South Wales.

Step 1: Your Celebrant Lodges Your Marriage Details

After your wedding, your celebrant will lodge your marriage details with Births, Deaths, and Marriages (BDM). However, BDM will not automatically send you an official marriage certificate—you’ll need to apply for it separately.

Step 2: Get Your Marriage Certificate

The first thing you’ll need is your official marriage certificate from BDM. This certificate is different from the ceremonial one you received on your wedding day. You’ll need to apply for it online, by mail, or in person. You can do that here: NSW BDM - Applying for an Official Marriage Certificate.

Step 3: Choose Your New Name

After marriage, you have a few options:

  • Take your spouse’s last name.

  • Hyphenate both last names.

  • Stick with your current name.

There’s no right or wrong choice—do what feels best for you.

Step 4: Update Your Details

Once you have your marriage certificate, it’s time to update your details with the necessary organizations, such as:

  • Government agencies (Medicare, ATO, passport office)

  • Your bank

  • Utility companies, memberships, and subscriptions

Step 5: Use a Name Change Service

Changing your name can feel like a lot of paperwork, but you don’t have to do it alone. Services like Easy Name Change can provide pre-filled forms and checklists to make the process easier.

Important Travel Tip

If you’re heading on your honeymoon, make sure your travel tickets match the name on your current passport. If they don’t, you may not be allowed to board your flight.
